Bioscience Cluster

National Bioscience Cluster

  • There are more than 300 bioscience drug products and vaccines
  • Industrial bioscience applications have led to cleaner processes that produce less waste and use less energy and water
  • Bioscience is one of the most research-intensive industries in the world

The Bioscience industry cluster involves the production of medical instruments, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and bioscience. The Bioscience industry is one of the most research-intensive industries in the world. In 2003 the U.S. Bioscience industry spent $17.9 billion on research and development. The Bioscience industry has seen a large amount of growth and interest recently as bioscience companies have made scientific advances and consumers have embraced the benefits offered by this industry.

National Outlook

The Bioscience industry has grown significantly since 1992. U.S. health-care bioscience revenues have increased from $8 billion in 1992 to $39 billion in 2003. The Bioscience industry produces a variety of products including:

  • Bioscience foods such as papaya, soybeans, and corn
  • Biopesticides and other agricultural products
  • Medical diagnostic test that keep the blood supply safe from the AIDS virus
  • Environmental bioscience products that enable more efficient ways to clean up hazardous waste
  • DNA Fingerprinting is a bioscience process that has dramatically improved criminal investigation and forensic medicine

The Bioscience industry is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Agriculture (USDA).
