Slurry Seal Project
What is it?

Slurry seal is a surface treatment designed to extend the life of existing pavements by filling surface cracks and voids, sealing weather tight, and adding texture and uniform appearance to the street.

Asphalt patching and repair of severely damaged concrete may have occurred or will occur in the near future, in preparation for the slurry seal.

Crack Sealing is scheduled to begin in the fall in those areas not previously completed, and the slurry seal is scheduled for the following summer. To better utilize equipment and coordinate with previous obligations to other projects, it may be necessary to withdraw from an area entirely, and return at a later date to complete the work. However, it is our intent to maintain all access during these times.

What to Expect

Slurry Seal only needs a few hours to setup before traffic can drive over it, but it takes 24-48 hours before it is completely cured. During this time, traffic and large vehicles, such as garbage trucks, may cause tire tracks and scuff marks over the surface. This is normal, and as more traffic drives over the surface, these marks will flatten out and the surface should appear uniform.

In addition, there may be small surface rocks that will roll off into the gutter. This is also normal, and City crews will sweep up the excess aggregate after the project is complete.

Slurry seal is designed to fill surface cracks and voids in the asphalt, while the larger cracks must be filled with a hot rubber sealant. As with any asphalt surface, reflection of these larger cracks through the slurry seal is anticipated.

Slurry seal is used for preventive maintenance and is designed to extend the life of a pavement. However, the ride quality of the street will NOT be improved as it would with an asphalt overlay or reconstruction.

Schedule

Approximately two weeks of good weather is required to seal each neighborhood. Working hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. Several streets are sealed each day, and some may be sealed one half at a time to accommodate traffic.

If you need to use your vehicle, be sure to move it to an accessible area before work begins.  You will be notified in writing the specifics pertaining to your area, including the date of work.  "NO PARKING" signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to the work, and on the day of construction the street will be CLOSED to all traffic.  The new surface is ready for use several hours after application, so please be patient.

Due to the nature of the slurry seal, the most favorable conditions for application are during hot summer months with low precipitation. Unpredictable rains can cause some delays to the project, however, and we will make every effort to change the "NO PARKING" signs as soon as possible to reflect the current schedule.
