Linden Street Renovation Project#
Summer 2024 First Friday Linden Street Activations
The 200 block of Linden Street, from Walnut to Jefferson, will see pedestrian-only activations during the summer season in 2024 as a part of a pilot program. During this time Linden Street will be closed to vehicle and bicycle traffic and converted to a pedestrian thoroughfare. These activations will occur on First Fridays this summer: June 7, July 5, August 2, and September 6 from from 4 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday.
Based on input from the community about how they would like to utilize Linden Street into the future, the City is piloting an activation plan for the 200 block of Linden Street in 2024.
Linden Street, from Walnut Street to Jefferson Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic and the road opened up as a pedestrian corridor on first Fridays of each month. Businesses on Linden Street will be able to utilize frontage during these times. Current patio and alcohol service regulations will remain in effect.
Additional Linden Street special event closures currently scheduled in 2024 are:
- Global Sounds 5/18/24
- Artisan Street Fair 6/29/24
- Fort Collins Art Festival 8/3/24 and 8/4/24
- Artisan Street Fair 8/31/24
- Artisan Street Fair 10/26/24
- Holiday Lighting Ceremony 11/1/24.
Overview#
The Linden Street Renovation project turns Linden Street between Jefferson and Walnut Street into a “convertible street"—a roadway that can be closed to vehicular and bicycle traffic and transformed into a pedestrian gathering space during special events.
To accomplish this, the City planned significant urban design and landscaping improvements, gateway elements, roadway/pedestrian improvements, and utility improvements. The conceptual design phase was completed in 2014 and the final design was completed in 2019.
Construction was originally planned for 2020, with the entire project built at once. However, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City postponed construction and ultimately broke the project into two phases. This was done in part to mitigate as much disruption as possible to the business community.
With construction and modifications to Linden Street now complete, it stands ready to serve as a convertible street. The City will be pilot-testing its functionality with temporary conversions (referred to as "activations") for special events in 2024.
