Police Investigate Fatal Single Vehicle Crash

Released on Wednesday, March 6, 2024

On March 6, 2024 at approximately 5:01 pm, Fort Collins 911 and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Communication Center began to receive multiple 911 calls regarding a serious crash that happened near John Deere Drive on the West I-25 Frontage Road. Multiple Fort Collins Police Officers, Larimer County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Colorado State Troopers responded to the scene.

When they arrived on scene, they located a white 2020 Mercedes GLE on the east side of the frontage road. It was evident based on the damage and witness reports that the vehicle had rolled multiple times. One adult male was located inside the vehicle; he was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Due to the collision being a fatality, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

To this point, the investigation has revealed that the Mercedes was travelling southbound on I-25, and possibly driving aggressively. The Mercedes intentionally left I-25 and onto the West I-25 Frontage Road and was travelling southbound. Information to this point indicates that the Mercedes was travelling at a high rate of speed. The Mercedes lost control and rolled multiple times.

The Mercedes was occupied only by the driver. The West I-25 Frontage Road was closed in between East Mulberry Street and East Vine Drive for approximately 5 1/2 hours while investigators processed the scene. Police are investigating if a medical event contributed to this crash. “Our thoughts are with the driver’s friend’s and family during this difficult time. The CRASH Team will do everything they can to work to find answers for them,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
