On July 14 -15, 2008, the City hosted a design charrette to examine the development site at the northwest corner of Harmony and Shields, which was recently rezoned from Medium Density Mixed-Use Neighborhood (MMN) to Neighborhood Commercial (NC) zoning.   A developer contacted the City with interest in developing a shopping center anchored by a Safeway on this site.  Due to the level of controversy related to the rezoning of this site and the complexity of the site, the City wanted to bring together residents, neighbors, city staff from departments that review developments, the developer, and the design consultants to define the issues of the site in detail and to brainstorm solutions that might meet neighbors’ concerns while also meeting the developer’s objectives. Some of the major issues that the workshop participants discussed included: traffic, environmental concerns, transportation patterns, building siting, architectural compatibility, landscape buffering, setbacks, traffic, signage and lighting. On August 7th a final meeting was held to wrap up the charette.

(A formal application for this project has not been made to the City and no date has been set for such application.)
