Storm Drain Stenciling

stencil image

Fort Collins' 3,000 storm drains channel rainwater - and any debris or pollution in street gutters - directly into the Poudre River or Spring Creek. Treatment plants do not purify the stormwater before it enters the waterways. Pollutants travel down drains directly into these streams and include:

  • soap from car washing;
  • oil and grease from car repairs;
  • fertilizers and pesticides from overzealous lawncare;
  • litter such as cigarette butts, cans and paint; and
  • unwanted household chemicals poured down the storm drain.

Storm drain stenciling is an educational, fun and interactive way to engage children and adults in preventing water pollution. Stenciled messages on a storm drain, such as "Dump No Waste, Drains to Poudre," reminds neighbors and passersby that these drains lead directly to our water sources.

Contact Utilities if your group or neighborhood is interested in stenciling storm drains.
