The demand rate is typically best for residential electric customers who:

  • use more than 1,400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month on average.

How It Works

Electric demand (measured in kilowatts, or kW) is the rate at which electricity is used. Demand meters operate somewhat like a speedometer, since they register how fast you use electricity. Demand meters measure:

  • your highest average demand (kW) for any 15-minute period during the billing month; and
  • energy use (kWh). This is the amount of electricity used during the month. This measurement is like the odometer on your car, telling you the number of miles traveled.

Since a meter reader resets the demand on the meter each month, property owners are responsible for maintaining safe and unobstructed meter access. If access is not available, Utilities will assign the energy rate.

Appliances used all at once result in a demand of 14.3 kW, costing $61.39
Appliances used one at a time result in a demand of 5.6 kW, costing $24.04
