Description

This design features Burrowing Owls. Small, beloved owls (averaging just 9 inches tall) which live in colonies, often deserted prairie dog towns. The north, south and west sides of the design will wrap around the transformer box as a continuous image. The distant hills and sky will be painted to appear connected with the large mural already in place on the west side of the Chestnut Street parking deck, where this box is located. The east side features a group of owls looking over the adjacent wall into the interior of the parking deck. The large eyes on the top of this design will be visible when viewed from the upper levels of the deck. I’m looking forward to using warm, earthy colors which will echo the construction materials of the deck and street pavers, as well as the challenge of painting this mural in a way which will connect with the existing mural already in place. It is my hope that the intimate viewpoints in my paintings will help form a sympathetic bond between viewers and the subjects. With all the distractions of modern life, I worry that people are not as easily connected to nature as in days past, and if there is no connection it becomes much easier to become apathetic - to me an unthinkable mindset.
