Description

Movements in Flow represents changes in the flow and passage of time. “Movements” symbolize the movements, or chapters, of different musical pieces, and “in Flow” represents how those different chapters can be in flux or ever-changing. Emily chose autumn as a theme for this piece because autumn is where the most changes occur: the weather gets colder, leaves that were once green and lush change color and drop, animals start preparing to hibernate, days gradually get shorter. Looking at such changes occur around her inspires her to think about the different movements of her life and how they’ve made her feel. She's also always felt more relaxed near bodies of water because the water never stays in the same place. They can bend around rocks, rush around land; the flow can be interrupted by falling obstacles or change with weather or landscape. And yet, it keeps moving forward regardless of the obstacles around or thrown right at it. Change has always been scary for Emily to think about and enact, but seeing it happen as a natural cycle of nature makes her realize that no matter how the leaves change and fall, how much the river changes its path, life continues to grow and move forward around her. Seeing that inspires her to continue to grow and move forward, too.

Emily is a third-year graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University, having previously earned her degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Despite her technical background, she has been passionate about both art and music for over a decade. Emily actively engages in artistic pursuits, including selling art at conventions, creating commissioned pieces for technical proposals, and regularly drawing and creating music at home. Driven by a belief that art is a powerful medium for sharing personal stories and connecting with others, she is eager to continue her artistic journey and express these stories through her work.
