Description

Soapstone Prairie Natural Area has public art elements by artist Robert Tully. Taking visual inspiration from the site's topography and history the artist created multiple site-specific artworks.

Tully worked with the project team in the design phase to develop the graceful curves of the roofs on the picnic shelters, entrance structure, and the Lindenmeier Overlook. The roof designs were given an Award of Merit by the Associated Builders and Contractors in late 2009.

The artist carved in stone, oversized replicas of artifacts found in the Lindenmeier archeological site. These educational aides are set in the walls of the Lindenmeier Overlook structure.

To welcome and orient visitors as they arrive at Soapstone, Tully stacked four stone cairns along the road in a gesture symbolic of historic human presence on the land. The artist also used stone and metal to create the Natural Area's entrance sign.
