In fact, it is one of the largest asphalt art projects in the country! So how can you help? You can use the street as your canvas by signing up to paint with us alongside artist Jess Bean. We will supply the design, instructions, and painting supplies. All you have to do is show up in your finest paint clothes with your co-workers or friends and we will put you to work!
Engage is the system we use to manage our volunteer sign ups. You will need to create an Engage account in order to sign up for this project. The link below is to our Engage system.

2024 Asphalt Art Project: Intersection of Magnolia, Canyon, and Sherwood#
We're thrilled to announce Bloomberg Philanthropies has selected our community as the recipient of an Asphalt Art Initiative grant of $25,000. This unique program supports projects that use art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents.
The grant will fund the installation of asphalt art at the intersection of Magnolia, Canyon, and Sherwood near The Lincoln Center, featuring asphalt art, traffic stripping and plastic curb extensions to slow traffic speeds, and shorter pedestrian crossing distances. The intersection improvements will also help clarify right-of-way confusion between the three streets.
Do you walk, bike or drive through the Magnolia, Canyon, and Sherwood intersection? Take our survey and share your thoughts on its safety and usability!
Why Asphalt Art?#
Public art can be found throughout Fort Collins. These projects offer moments of beauty, introspection, and curiosity in our everyday lives.
The Asphalt Art program brings public art into unique spaces to enhance the beauty of our community while creating safer streets. Studies have shown the placement of art in roadways helps calm traffic and lower speeds; intersections with asphalt art have fewer crashes and safer pedestrian street crossings.
Our most recent asphalt art project#
First painted curb extensions at Roosevelt and Maple
Many thanks to everyone who assisted with the installation of our city's first painted curb extensions! These works of art are both beautiful and an effective traffic calming method.
By using curb extensions with plastic marker posts and asphalt art we expect to see a reduction in vehicle speeds and bicycle and pedestrian-related accidents at this intersection. These results will be tracked and reported once post installation data has been gathered.
Each neighborhood has a story to tell#
Every Asphalt Art project represents the story of that individual community: the past, present and future of the people who call that neighborhood their home.
Listen to members of these communities tell their story in their own words below.
This collection of oral stories was made possible with grant funding from the National Association of City Transportation Officials.
