Police Investigate Serious Crash Involving Motorcycle

Released on Friday, June 7, 2024

On June 7, 2024 at approximately 11:08 am, Fort Collins 911 received multiple calls regarding a serious collision at the intersection of West Drake Road and South Shields Street. The collision involved a Jeep Patriot, Suzuki motorcycle, and a Dodge Grand Caravan. The motorcycle rider had serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of the injuries to the motorcyclist, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.

To this point, the investigation has revealed that the Jeep Patriot was in the left-hand turn lane on Drake Road preparing to make a left turn and go northbound on Shields Street. The Suzuki Motorcycle was traveling westbound on Drake Road approaching the intersection of Shields and Drake Road. As the Jeep turned, the Suzuki motorcycle collided with the rear part of the Jeep. The motorcycle rider lost control striking a traffic sign in the center median west of the intersection and then collided with a Dodge Caravan that was in the same left turn lane that the Jeep was in prior to the turn.

Police are investigating if speeding by the motorcycle was a possible factor in the collision, along with working to determine the right-of-way. The Suzuki motorcycle also was not displaying a legal license plate.

“Traffic laws exist for everyone’s safety, when one or more of those laws are not followed, the likelihood of collisions with potentially tragic results increases. Roadway safety is all our responsibility,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

Anyone with information regarding this crash, or with possible dash cam footage is asked to contact Fort Collins Police Officer David Kaes at (970) 416 2229.
