Police Investigate Serious Hit & Run Collision
On July 26, 2024 at approximately 1:39 am, Fort Collins Police were made aware of a serious collision involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Laporte Avenue and College Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male and an adult female, both who were riding the motorcycle, near the intersection with serious injuries. It was discovered that the motorcycle was hit by another vehicle. Officers located the other involved vehicle, a Toyota Rav4, with the Suzuki motorcycle stuck underneath the front of it, further to the north and parked in a parking spot.
The occupants of the Rav4 had run from the vehicle, but Fort Collins Police Officers were able to quickly locate them. Police believe that all occupants are accounted for. The male who was driving the motorcycle, and the female passenger were both transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. At this point, the CRASH Team is working to determine who was driving the Rav4 when the crash occurred. The occupants of the Rav4 have not been fully cooperative with police. Officers have been able to determine that the Rav4 was travelling northbound on College Avenue when it collided with the Suzuki which was travelling westbound on Laporte Avenue and preparing to make a left-hand-turn to go southbound on College Avenue. Officers are working to confirm who had the right-of-way as well.
“Hit and run collisions are very serious offenses, and our CRASH Team will work diligently to identify who was driving the vehicle when the collision occurred,” said Lieutenant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
College Avenue was closed in between Mountain Avenue and Maple Street/Jefferson Street for approximately 5 hours while investigators processed the scene.
Police are asking anyone who may have information, including any possible dash cam or video surveillance of the collision or the occupants running from the vehicle to please contact Officer Brandon Barnes at (970) 221 6540.
