On August 20th, 2024, Fort Collins Police Services announced plans to bring AVIS (Automated Vehicle Identification System) corridor enforcement to the City of Fort Collins as an extension of their Traffic Safety Initiative (TSI). As previously stated, AVIS technology is permitted based on new legislation (Senate Bill 23-200) that allows for a roadway to be identified as a corridor based on incidents of crashes, speeding, reckless driving, or community complaints in the concentrated areas.

On September 18th, 2024, Fort Collins Police Services identified roadways that met the criteria set forth in the senate bill where citizens can expect AVIS corridor enforcement. Those roadways are:

Suniga Road – College Avenue to Lemay Avenue · Riverside Drive - College Avenue to Pitkin Street · Prospect Road - Taft Hill Road to Interstate 25 · Drake Road – Overland Trail to Miles House Avenue · Horsetooth Road – College Avenue to Ziegler Road · Harmony Road – Chokecherry Trail to Interstate 25 · Trilby Road – Wainwright Drive to College Avenue · Taft Hill Road – Mulberry Street to Trilby Street · Shields Street – Elizabeth Street to Bon Homme Richard Drive · College Avenue – Carpenter Road to Laurel Street · Lemay Avenue – Prospect Road to Trilby Street · Timberline Road – Prospect Road to Trilby Street · Ziegler Road – William Neal Parkway to Kechter Road · Conifer Street – College Avenue to Lemay Avenue · Mulberry Street – Taft Hill Road to 12th Street · Stuart Street – College Avenue to Lemay Avenue · Elizabeth Street – Overland Trail to Shields Street · Overland Trail – Mulberry Street to Drake Road

On October 25th, 2024, Fort Collins Police Services will begin issuing warnings for violations of speeding 10+ mph above the posted limit that are captured by AVIS (a picture of the warning is posted below). A sign stating, “Traffic Laws Photo Enforced” has been posted at the beginning and end of each corridor where warnings will begin. This sign is to notify motorists that they have entered an AVIS corridor. At intersections equipped with red-light cameras motorists will see the same “Traffic Laws Photo Enforced” sign not less than 200 feet and not more than 500 feet prior to the intersection. At locations where a mobile camera radar vehicle or a transportable radar unit is positioned, a sign stating, “Photo Radar Ahead” will be posted no less than 300 feet before the mobile camera radar vehicle.

If a violation is detected the AVIS system will take a photograph of the vehicle and the driver. A warning notice will be sent via first class mail to the address of the registered owner. This is a courtesy notice during this 30-day period and no further action is required by the registered owner and or the recipient of the warning notice. At least one week prior to the end of the 30-day warning period a public announcement will be made indicating the start of citations being issued.
