Police Investigate Fatal Motorcycle Collision

Released on Sunday, October 20, 2024

On October 19, 2024 at approximately 6:45 pm, Fort Collins Police were notified of a serious roll over crash at the intersection of East Prospect Road and South Lemay Avenue. The crash involved a 2016 Ford Focus and a 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 motorcycle. When officers arrived on scene, they located the Focus on its side. There were two, adult male occupants inside the Focus. Officers found the Kawasaki was ridden by one adult male as well. The Kawasaki rider had life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced deceased. The two occupants in the Focus had to be extricated and they were transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor and moderate injuries.

Due to the crash being a fatality, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. At this time, the investigation has revealed that the Ford Focus was travelling southbound on South Lemay Ave and the Kawasaki motorcycle was travelling eastbound on East Prospect Road. Witnesses and video surveillance indicate that the Kawasaki disregarded a solid red traffic light when it collided with the passenger side of the Ford Focus. The investigation is still ongoing though to determine what other factors may have contributed to the crash.

“Unfortunately, this is our third fatal crash in the last four days in Fort Collins. These types of incidents affect everyone involved and our community as a whole. The intersection of East Prospect Road and South Lemay Avenue were closed for approximately 5 hours while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information about the collision who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at (970) 221 6540.
