Police Investigate Serious Collision
On August 21, 2024 at approximately 8:38 P.M., Fort Collins Police were notified of a serious crash at the intersection of West Prospect Road and South Shields Street. The collision involved a 2021 GMC Sierra and an electric scooter. The electric scooter was being ridden by an adult female who had life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of those injuries. Due to the severity of the collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.
The investigation to this point has revealed that the GMC was travelling southbound on Shields Street and making a left-hand-turn when it collided with the scooter in the crosswalk on the east hand side of the intersection. The scooter rider was in the crosswalk travelling southbound. Officers are working to determine whether the GMC or the scooter rider had the right of way. The GMC was occupied by two adults, one male and one female.
“While the circumstances and factors that led up to this crash are still under investigation, we ask all roadway users to obey traffic laws and follow the appropriate traffic signals. All roadway users are urged to remain vigilant as it gets darker sooner and becomes more difficult to see others,” said Sergeant David Lindsay who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
The intersection of West Prospect Road and South Shields Street was closed for approximately 6 ½ hours while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact Corporal Shane Hasebroock at (970) 221 6540.
