On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes scheduled to fly from the East Coast to California. In a coordinated attack, two of the hijacked planes were intentionally flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, a global business complex in New York City, causing the towers to collapse. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, located in Arlington, Virginia. Passengers and crew members on the fourth plane launched a counterattack, forcing the plane — that was heading towards Washington, D.C.—to crash into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, near the town of Shanksville.

Close to 3,000 people died during the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, and hundreds more have died since due to health complications from exposure to toxins at the scene. The events on 9/11 represent the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and remains the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history. Of those lives lost on Sept. 11, over 343 were firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency services providers. 

The Nation’s Story.  Our Community’s Cause.

The 9/11 attacks left an indelible mark on people and politics, not only in America, but around the globe. That fateful day also had a lasting effect on the Northern Colorado community.

Soon after 9/11, Colorado Task Force 1 (COTF-1) – Urban Search and Rescue, a federal disaster response team, deployed 62 Coloradans – including nine firefighters from Poudre Fire Authority – to New York City to assist with urban search and recovery efforts. By telling their story, we acknowledge that the response to tragedy defines a community more than the tragedy itself.

The 9/11 Memorial at Spring Park honors those killed on Sept. 11, as well as those who risked their lives to save others, and all who demonstrated extraordinary compassion in the aftermath of the attacks. This memorial honors the loss all Americans felt that day, while highlighting the local effort of COTF-1.

The Journey of the Beam

The 5-foot long, 3,059-pound piece of metal rooted in the center of the memorial site was, at one time, just a rust-colored I-beam – one of the countless parts of the World Trade Center’s towering skeleton.

Remarkably, it was transformed by the grief and love of the thousands of people who bore witness to its cross-country journey, from a nondescript New York Port Authority warehouse to Poudre Fire Authority Station 4 on West Drake Road.

The singular piece of steel, pulled from the wreckage of the World Trade Center walls arrived in Fort Collins, Colorado on October 24, 2015.

“It is not about us, the PFA firefighters who brought the beam back to Fort Collins,” said Jim Durkin, a Poudre Fire Authority fire inspector, and one of the beam’s guardians along the journey. “It’s about what the beam represents. The 343 firefighters who ran toward danger, perishing in their efforts to save people trapped in the towers. It’s about the emergency medical technicians and law enforcement officers who perished, and the nearly 3,000 people who died that fateful day. It's the sacrifice that we will Never Forget.”

QUEENS, NEW YORK

The beam’s journey to Fort Collins began with a ceremony at New York Fire Department Engine 311 Hook and Ladder 158 station in Queens, New York. Dozens and dozens of firefighters and community members gathered to pay their respects.

 GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE, BETWEEN NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY

The World Trade Center beam then crossed the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey, escorted by more than 100 off-duty firefighters on motorcycles, members of the state patrol, and fire vehicles. In a show of respect, as if yielding to a funeral procession, cars pulled onto the curbs to clear the clear the way for the beam.

OHIO

On the morning of October 22, 2015, members of the Patriot Guard escorted the beam from State College, in Pennsylvania, to the Ohio border, and across the entire state. Once they reached Toledo, the beam and its guardians were greeted by Ohio State Troopers and the Toledo Fire Department.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS                                                                   

Route 80 in Chicago closed during rush hour to allow the beam safe passage with an escort of representatives from countless emergency services agencies, as well as the Patriot Guard Riders and military veterans. As the beam left the city, word had spread of its arrival and hundreds of people lined the interstate with American flags in hand.

NEBRASKA

Across the state, from town to town, people and emergency agencies escorted the beam and its guardians. At one point, a helicopter flew alongside as fire trucks and well-wishers lined bridges and overpasses along highways.

COLORADO & WYOMING BORDER

On October 24, 2015, after 1,800 miles of travel, Poudre Fire Authority vehicles met the beam and its escorts at the Wyoming and Colorado border to complete the drive into Fort Collins. Hundreds of people lined the roadside, welcoming the beam home with unforgettable displays of local support and pride.

We Will Never Forget

The events of 9/11 irrevocably changed the lives of victims’ families and friends, survivors, first responders, police and medical personnel, rescue and recovery workers, volunteers, and millions of Americans and people around the world.

Creating a local memorial as a place of remembrance, contemplation, gratitude, sorrow, and respect has been a journey of importance for so many.

Three hundred forty-three rectangular-shaped paving stones, honoring the 343 firefighters who perished in the attacks, create the serpentine walkways to and from the Spring Creek Trail and park entry into the memorial, with the World Trade Center steel I-beam showcased as the centerpiece.

In contrast to the chaos of the events of 9/11, a mature Larch tree stands firmly near the memorial site. Although a conifer, Larch trees are deciduous trees and lose their needles each autumn, which is unique for this species.  Among the earliest trees to come into leaf each spring, the Larch tree in Spring Park symbolizes both new life and resilience.

NEBRASKA

Crear un monumento local como un lugar de recuerdo, contemplación, gratitud, dolor y respeto ha sido un viaje importante para muchos.
