Flora of North America recognizes two varieties of R. inerme, both native the the U.S. Variety klamathense is native to Oregon and California and variety inerme is native to the western U.S. including Colorado and the Fort Collins area.
Plants in the genus Ribes are important larval and adult food hosts for many of our native invertebrates.
Fall color is red to purple.
