Flora of North America recognizes two varieties of C. stipata, both native to the U.S.

Variety stipata is native to the Fort Collins area and most of the U.S. and variety maxima is native to the eastern portion of the U.S. The two varieties vary slightly in appearance, primarily in the width of their leaves and the size of their fruit.
