Flora of North America recognizes four subspecies of D. carolinianum, all native to the U.S. Varieties calciphilum, carolinianum and vimineum are native to portions of the southern and southcentral U.S. Variety virescens is native to parts of the midwestern, southcentral and southwestern U.S., including Colorado.
