USDA Plants National Database recognizes seven varieties of E. wrightii, all native to the southwestern and western U.S. Varieties membranaceum, olanchense, and trachygonum are only native to California. Variety nodosum is native to Arizona and California, variety pringlei is native to Arizona, and variety subscaposum is native to Nevada and California. This variety, wrightii, is native to the southwestern and southcentral states.
