What is the Fort Collins Travel Diary Report?#

The Fort Collins Travel Diary Report is completed every few years to collect data regarding travel behavior for residents. The survey involves a detailed travel diary that participants fill out over the course of a week, documenting where they go and how they get there—whether they drive, walk, bike/scooter or use public transit.

7,500 potential participants are selected at random and receive survey materials by mail to generate a sample size that is statistically significant and representative of the community. If you were one of the lucky households to receive and complete the survey, thank you!

Why do we conduct this survey?

We want to know how you travel so we can make improvements based on what you need. Capturing detailed data also helps us track progress. This information informs transportation and infrastructure planning which guides how people will travel to, from, and around Fort Collins in the future.

The first travel diary survey was completed in 2017 and the 2022 survey was the second completed by the City. Unsurprisingly, there have been many changes in travel behavior among residents since 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic was a major factor, as its unprecedented impact on the daily lives of people around the world resulted in substantial shifts to people's commutes and workplace dynamics.
