Colorado Family and Medical Leave Insurance#

A family hugging

City of Fort Collins non-benefit-eligible employees can get up to 12 weeks of paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) at no cost, supporting them when they need it most— like when expanding their family or taking care of a loved one in need.

While Colorado's FAMLI program, approved by voters in 2020, requires contributions from employers and employees, the City of Fort Collins has elected to pay the employee portion of premiums for all non-benefit-eligible employees. FAMLI benefits will kick in on January 1, 2024, providing valuable support during important life circumstances.

To receive free paid FAMLI leave, you must:

  • Be a City of Fort Collins employee who is not eligible for City benefits*,
  • Have earned at least $2,500 over the course of four consecutive quarters with the City, and
  • Contact HRBenefits@fcgov.com to get started.

*Only City of Fort Collins employees who do not qualify for City benefits need apply with the State. Benefit-eligible employees have similar benefits through City programs.

Before doing anything else, reach out to HRBenefits@fcgov.com to inform them that you are interested in starting the process for FAMLI with the State. The Benefits team will verify your eligibility and send a wage report to the State on your behalf.

If the State does not receive a wage report from the City of Fort Collins verifying your eligibility for the program, your claim will be denied.

Why the City Opted Out of FAMLI for Benefitted Employees#

Colorado voters approved Proposition 118 in November 2020, creating a state-run paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program to provide employees with up to 12 weeks of paid leave during life circumstances that pull them away from their jobs.

In late 2022, The City of Fort Collins Human Resources Department recommended and Council approved the decision to opt out of the State FAMLI program based on the cost to our employees, the desire to provide choice to employees, and a plan to enhance employee benefit leaves to match or exceed the State's program.
