Refrigerators and freezers contain Freon, which requires special recycling to prevent environmental harm.
Because older appliances are often less efficient and can contribute to higher energy use, it is not recommended to sell them. Instead, consider trading them in through an appliance retailer that ensures proper disposal or recycling, or use the free Efficiency Works pickup option linked below.
Refrigerators can also be recycled at the drop-off locations listed below. Fees may apply; contact specific location for details.
State law requires Freon be removed by an appropriately licensed company before disposal. They should never be put in curbside recycling or trash.
