Traffic Signs#

Sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance for traffic signs are done in-house in "the sign shop" at Traffic Operations. Throughout the year, the traffic crews are responsible for maintaining approximately 30,000 signs.  These include speed limit signs, STOP signs and street name signs.

Currently, traffic crews are upgrading street name signs to improve visibility and legibility. Crews are also working to upgrade all regulatory (STOP signs, speed limit signs etc.) and warning signs to improve visibility.  These changes are in response to new Federal regulations that are intended to improve the effectiveness of traffic signage and thereby improve traffic safety.

Pavement Markings#

Traffic Operations paints approximately 1,500 lane miles of roads per year using 25,000 gallons of paint. Crews also maintain about 1,500 crosswalks, pavement marking arrows, railroad markings, and red curbs.

Traffic Operations uses environmentally safe latex paint for traffic marking. Using a water-based (latex) paint decreases hazardous waste generation requiring only soap and water for machinery cleanup. Latex paints contain less solvent than oil-based paints and the cost of latex paint is also lower than Low VOC solvent based paints.

In 2011 Traffic Operations started using longer-lasting plastic markings for arrows and crosswalks on new asphalt installed as part of the Street Maintenance Program. These plastic markings provide better visibility, especially at night, compared to paint. Over the life of the product, the cost is lower compared to paint. Also, because it does not need to be maintained as often, worker exposure to traffic is reduced. Use of these durable markings was made possible by voter approval of the Keep Fort Collins Great tax initiative 2010.
