Damascus is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. It could be the site of the Garden of Eden. The prophet Muhammad upon seeing Damascus refused to go in, saying man should only enter paradise once. Mark Twain said "To Damascus, years are only moments, decades are only flitting trifles of time. She measures time not by days and months and years but by the empires she has seen rise and prosper and crumble to ruin. She is a type of immortality". She is timeless.
Time measured, compiled, analyzed, scheduled, informs our world. A quantity indispensable in all actions and activities we perform, time holds an uncomfortable and often distasteful power over us, under which we bridle and rebel.
The flip side of time, the yin to times' yang, is timelessness. Time an invaluable, sober quantity - Timeless, a quality boundless and intoxicating.
While respectful and mindful of the strictures of time, particularly when working with clay and glazes, the goal of my work is to express the timeless.
Figure sculpture of animals provides the ideal venue for this pursuit. Time, so important to us, means nothing to them; doesn't exist. Instead, without effort, they exude the ineffable qualities of timelessness. My job is to first not try to translate that quality, just render it. And then I bring my considerable experience and expertise to the project with all the accompanying joys and sorrows felt during that passage of time.

Pianos About Town#
March 5, 2025 - March 9, 2025 | 12pm - 6pm
Art in Public Places will be showcasing murals from the Pianos About Town @pianos_about_town archives. Plywood panels are added to the back of a piano to give the muralists a better surface to paint. When the pianos are no longer playable, we keep the plywood panels as an archive of the murals and that is what we have on display.

You, Me, We brings together six painting students from Colorado State University as they stand on the cusp of graduation, independence, and transformative life changes. Working side by side for a year, each artist developed a body of work that reflects their explorations of identity and self-expression shaped by the support and camaraderie of their shared studio practice. This exhibition presents an eclectic yet interconnected collection of works, highlighting the paradox of introspection within a communal environment. You, Me, We invites viewers to explore the visual and conceptual dialogues between each artist’s work to uncover the parallels that emerge from these deeply personal yet collective artistic journeys.

The Obelisk.
An iconic sculptural form prevalent throughout the ages, the obelisk, pyramid and pyramidian’s purpose has been interpreted in a variety of ways including socio/political/religious connotations along with different manifestations of power, achievement and majesty. All of these contribute to the inscrutability of the icon.
This group of current works constitute an image based modernist exploration of the Egyptian concept of harmony and balance achieved through opposites: (left/right, up/down, in/out, earth/sky, light/dark, mortal/immortal). This balance is implied utilizing modern material vs. monolithic stone to open the structure by a series of planear elements, establishing contour, line, and negative space- while maintaining the spirit, power, majesty and environmental connection contained in the original.
