Police Investigate Fatal Crash

Released on Wednesday, June 12, 2024

On June 12, 2024, at approximately 2:06 am, Fort Collins Police were notified of a two-vehicle collision in the 2900 block of South Timberline Road. When officers arrived on scene, they located two vehicles with severe damage in the southbound lanes of Timberline Road. The collision involved a 1989 Cadillac sedan and a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Cadillac was occupied only by the driver, an adult male, and the Jeep was occupied by two adult males. All occupants had to be extricated by Poudre Fire Authority Firefighters and were all transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. The driver of the Cadillac was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Due to this being a fatal collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation. To this point, the investigation has revealed that the Cadillac was travelling northbound on Timberline Road when it crossed over into on-coming traffic and collided with the Jeep that was southbound, resulting in a head-on collision.

Police are investigating if the use of illegal drugs were involved by the driver of the Cadillac. The Larimer County Coroner will release the identity of the decedent, to include the cause and manner of death at a later date.

“While the factors regarding the cause of the collision are still under investigation, we implore roadway users to not drive under the influence of any impairing substances. Driving impaired can lead to devastating crashes and is completely preventable,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.

Southbound Timberline Road was closed at Custer Drive for approximately 5 ½ hours while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information about the crash who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at (970) 221-6842.
