Suspect Arrested for Internet Sexual Exploitation of a Child

Released on Thursday, July 18, 2024

On Thursday, July 18, 2024, Fort Collins Police arrested a 60-year-old man from Aurora, CO for sexual exploitation of a child.

A one-and-a-half month long investigation led by FCPS Cyber Crimes Unit culminated in today’s arrest of Roger Leon Estergaard (dob 03/06/64). Detectives identified Estergaard as a potential threat following his inappropriate engagement with an underaged online persona. After multiple conversations online he traveled to Fort Collins, CO, with the idea he was contacting a juvenile female to engage in sexual acts. Upon his arrival at the predetermined meeting location, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit and Criminal Impact Unit placed Estergaard under arrest.

Estergaard was booked on the following charges:

· Class 4 Felony - Internet Sexual Exploitation of a Child

· Class 4 Felony - Internet Luring of a Child

· Class 5 Felony - Attempted Sexual Assault of a Child

“The kind of diligent work these teams did to secure Estergaard is commendable. It takes an extensive amount of patience and thorough investigation to pursue leads and orchestrate an arrest like this,” said FCPS Assistant Chief, Kristy Volesky, who leads the FCPS Criminal Investigations Division. “There is great satisfaction when we can report to the community we have removed this kind of contemplated and planned predatory sexual behavior.”

Parents wanting to maintain candid conversations with their children about safe online practices and how to report predation attempts can find resources at https://www.fcgov.com/police/internet-safety.php.

Charges are merely an accusation by law enforcement and all suspects must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
