Police Investigate Serious Crash
On September 19, 2024 at approximately 7:28 am, Fort Collins Police were notified of a serious crash at the intersection of South Shields Street and West Lake Street. The crash involved a 2015 Ford Edge and a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle. The Kawasaki rider, an adult male, had life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The sole occupant of the Ford, an adult male, was uninjured. Due to the severity of the crash, the Fort Collins Police Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling (CRASH) Team responded to take over the investigation.
To this point, the investigation has revealed that that Kawasaki motorcycle was travelling northbound on South Shields Street. The Ford Edge was travelling southbound on South Shields Street and making a left turn to travel eastbound on West Lake Street. The collision occurred in the middle of the intersection. Police are investigating if excessive speed was a factor in the collision.
“The investigation remains in its early stages, and the CRASH Team is thoroughly examining whether speed played a role in this collision. In the meantime, all drivers are urged to be attentive to speed limits and vigilant of other roadway users,” said Sergeant David Lindsay who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
South Shields Street was closed between West Prospect Road and Bennett Road for approximately five and a half hours while investigators processed the scene. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at (970) 221-6842.
