Fossil Creek and Stanton Creek Stream Rehabilitation Project#
We would love your feedback on how you utilize the natural areas near this project. We are hoping to understand how you use this space in the winter and summer months and what you value most about the trails and natural area.
Project Overview & Goals#
Stream rehabilitation and projects repair areas of streams where the ecology, safety, structure and water quality of the stream have changed over time. The Fossil Creek & Stanton Creek project will address the impacts from agricultural flows through Fossil Creek and work with existing conditions on Stanton Creek to create a more sustainable channel. Fort Collins Utilities is working alongside three other City departments (Natural Areas, Parks, and Transportation) to help make this project run smoothly and successfully.
The goals for this project are:
- Create a channel profile that can accommodate:
- low flows in the winter
- irrigation flows April through September
- the required 100 year storm
- Restore banks with appropriate vegetation
- Install proactive treatments for erosion control
In collaboration with Utilities Stream Rehabilitation project, the City of Fort Collins Engineering Department will replace the culvert under Trilby Road, between Lemay Avenue and Timberline Road. The culvert replacement will happen around the same time as the stream rehabilitation project.
This will minimize the road closure and inconvenience to the traveling public. The culvert replacement project will enhance stream flow and improve fish passage.

FAQ#
-
When construction begins, there will be temporary trail closures as we move materials across its path. We will try to keep trails open as much as possible. However, once the culvert work begins under the bridge at Trilby Rd, the trail will be closed for your safety until that work is complete.
-
No, we will only be replace the infrastructure that is already there. Your view will not change.
-
Native plants will be planted around the area once the project is complete. These plants take time to grow as their roots grow several feet before we start to see growth above ground. We will have a 5 year monitoring program in place to ensure proper growth is happening.
